KEEP ME SAFE FROM HARM, LET ME FALL
Saturday night, I was able to attend the Colorado Crush (the local Arena Football Team) game with my neighbor. It was a good time. We had really good seats. We were about 5 rows up near the half yard line of the field (the 25 yard line which would be like the 50 yard line in regular American football game).
Sadly, the Crush lost the game to Cleveland. We were hoping to see the video about the John Dutton Touchdown Club (see more about it at the Dutton Family Foundation website, http://duttonfoundation.org, but we did not see the video.
However, we did have a great view of the game and of the activities. It was the Crush team mascot’s, Crusher, birthday. So he had some other local mascot there to help him celebrate. There was Chip from the University of Colorado, Pistol Pete of the University of Wyoming, the mascot from Colorado College, the mascot from Regis University, the three mascots the Colorado Rapids (not sure why they have three, maybe one for each fan, oh cheap shot at soccer, you beat a), Wooly of the Colorado Mammoth, and Rocky of the Nuggets.
A course, Rocky rules. After the halftime mascot football game, he stuck around and entertained the crowd. There was this extreme bike team who did some tricks on their bike after jumping on a ramp. For one the riders, Rocky got at the end of the ramp and they over jump him. This was almost right in front of us and I was kicking myself for not bringing my camera; however, I used my cellphone camera and got this picture which came out amazingly well.

JUST TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER NOW
I love sports. I care about the games. However, doesn’t the government have more important things to do than get involved into NFL cheating? I was looking for the words to say about what our leaders are spending time focusing on, but then once again Drew Litton says it better than I ever could.

HELLO MY FRIEND, HELLO
EDITORS NOTE: I thought it would be fun to do a series of blog entries from my Friends With Out Blogs (FWOB). So I asked ten of my friends if they would like to write an entry. I told them they could write about whatever they wanted. One said no, six did not reply to my requests in any way, and three said yes. However, one of the three is so busy, she may not be able to make an entry anytime soon. We will see. Still, I have at least two entries for my FWOB Series.
This is the second entry and it comes from Matt R. For those of you Monkey Pen Members (Loyal Readers), you might recognize Matt as he makes up about 40% of the comments on the blog. Thank you Matt. He and I have been very good friends since high school. Currently, he and his wife and son and step-son live in the Kansas City, Missouri area.
The opinions express are those of the Matt and do not necessarily reflect those of opinions of the owner of this blog.
You know, some Neil Diamond songs never get old, and some are just classics. Some things and some people are just “friends†that always come back and make you smile. This year I lost one of my best friends.
Two days before Valentines Day, my father passed away. Even though he is gone, and he couldn’t walk when he died, I know he is dancing before Jesus – and I can only hope to live my daily life as close to Christ as he did. Even though my dad was 86 when he died, he was 50 when I was born, and my parents divorced when I was very young. During my teenage years my dad lived in California while I lived with my mother in Colorado. So it wasn’t until 15 yrs ago did I move to Missouri where he lived and really got to spend some quality time with him. Besides my wife, he is the only other person on this earth who has loved me unconditionally. He showed me Christ love for me by the way he lived his love for me. So my time was short with him, and I some how feel cheated – I am sure that will take some time to get over, but until then, I think of the lyrics to MercyMe’s “Homesick”. This part especially…
You’re in a better place, I’ve heard a thousand times
And at least a thousand times I’ve rejoiced for you
But the reason why I’m broken, the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you
I close my eyes and I see your face
If home’s where my heart is then I’m out of place
Lord, won’t you give me strength to make it through somehow
I’ve never been more homesick than now
Help me Lord cause I don’t understand your ways
The reason why I wonder if I’ll ever know
But, even if you showed me, the hurt would be the same
Cause I’m still here so far away from home
On a lighter note…Another “friend” of mine growing up is my favorite basketball team – the Boston Celtics. Hello My Friend , Hello…the Celtics are back this year and probably one of the best teams the organization has seen. So I hope they continue in their winning ways and win a National Championship.
Another “friend” that always seemed to let me down is also showing signs of being something better, and that is the Kansas City Royals. Thank you to the Royals for building a team worth watching and also building the largest HD screen in the world (for now).
Two great reasons to go to Kaufmann Stadium.
And lastly, thank you to my friend Scot – who has given me a chance to heal a little more by sharing my thoughts. So this year is almost half over, and so far I have lost a friend, old friends have come around again, and some friends never left me.
Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night
And I know its late
But I couldn’t wait…Hello
NO, WE AIN’T GONNA TAKE IT

The first entry comes from Randy B. I have know Randy since around middle school. He is great guy who is married with one son and another child on the way. He and his family live near the shadow of Shawn Chacon’s place in Northern Colorado.

The Dark Days of Sports
I enjoy watching and following sports, from college to professional. It’s a cheap hobby (most of the time) that I’ve had for years, but lately it’s been tough to enjoy. Not because information is too hard to come by; in fact just the opposite. Coverage across the whole media spectrum is getting worse and worse.
Giving opinions about sports is half the fun. Coverage that is enjoyable to watch, read, or listen to is getting harder to come by.
There are so many examples. Pregame and halftime shows, especially for football, are turning into some kind of light-bulb joke (how many ex-athletes does it take…) with the ever-increasing cast of “experts†crowded around a tiny table to stumble through highlights and opinions. And, they actually go on National Television dressed that way.
Don’t get me started on sideline reporters.
There is no relief on the local front. I will give the Fan credit for keeping most of their radio programming local during a time where that is not the norm. That said, the afternoon radio program is awful. Too bad, because Irv Brown really is a genuine nice guy. But Joe Williams’ shtick of “the other team is always better than ours†is beyond old, and Jim Armstrong is so out of place as a full time co-host. They go to the well of pushing buttons to stir up angry calls so much it’s just a turn-off.
Speaking of Armstrong, his cohorts in newspaper are the worst of all. Mark Kisla is one of those columnists whose ego seems out-of-control right now. He is actively trying to get coaches fired, players run out of town, whatever the case may be, because he believes he either has that power, or SHOULD have that power. Not because he cares about any of our teams; rather it’s all about his own ego. In fact, the more turmoil, the better for him. Only true fans should have the right to trash their team! No one suffers more for their teams when they struggle than the true fan. We get it already.
While this is nothing new for newspapers, there is no where to turn anymore for an alternative. Too much is out there in all mediums, diluting the product to the point where instead of doing a few things well, it’s a ton of stuff done poorly.
Every sports television channel or program always tries to get the ex-jock as broadcasters to give “credibility†to their opinions. Problem is, only very few of them are actually good at it. I loved Shannon Sharpe with the Broncos, off the cuff and so animated. Now, it’s just painful to listen to him try to stumble through scripted highlights. Only TV and radio are plagued with this. You don’t see newspapers or websites clamoring for ex-athletes or coaches to write for them. But for some reason TV and radio had decided it doesn’t need broadcasters.
This wouldn’t be such a problem if there wasn’t so much time to fill. ESPN used to be so much better before branching out more and more. So, they all get more desperate for viewers because there are only so many to go around. As a result, they all try to be something else. The sportscaster must also be a funny comedian, be set apart from every other one who, ironically, tries to do the exact same thing.
So what about newspapers and the Web? While not populated with ex-jocks trying to fill time on the 24 hour network, you have egomaniacs trying to be more and more over the top trying to garner attention.
The bottom line is it will lead to the implosion of the industry, and we have already seen some negative moves, like Monday Night Football going to ESPN. The once top-ten ratings program has been reduced to amateur hour on most nights, and doesn’t crack the top 50 in ratings because of the limited exposure and interest.
Just try to watch a game on NFL Network, if you can.
Sports cost a lot of money to produce, and with it so diluted, sponsors can’t get a return on the investment. It could lead to all sports going to a PPV format. Hopefully it will never come to that, but until The Management can come up with a visionary way to put together more quality coverage, we will be stuck with more of the same and continue down this road. Competition is supposed to improve those involved. Instead, in today’s copycat world of broadcasting, it actually eliminates the need for it.
So, as it continues, I will be less and less invested in it. My wife won’t be such a football widow come fall. Maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
WHY DON’T YOU EVER CALL ME BY MY NAME
Link Love. It is a funny thing. It has become an important thing is the worlds of blogs.
A course having a blog and website, I enjoy it when I get some link love. I am glad to link back to anyone’s site who links to me. So if you have a blog and I am not linking to yours, let me know. I would be glad to place a link to your site from my blog.
Some of the blog links on the left link back to me and some don’t. That is fine. They are some of the blogs I like to read, and thought I would list them for your possible enjoyment.
However, I have noticed one thing about all the sites that link to me, they call me by many different names. It is kind of assuming to me and it is fine. I really don’t mind the many names as long as people are linking to me. All of them work for me.
Just for your knowledge here are some of the names I have seen for links to this website (at least the ones I have seen):
- Admirable
- Admirable Thoughts
- Code Monkey Blog
- Writings of Code Monkey (i.e. One of the sites that is using that name for the link, list me under Cool Blogs. I like that. So they I will give them a extra link in this story: Denver In Translations)
- The Marions Life
- Scot’s Site
FEEL THAT OLD CABIN FEVER COMING ON
Well, Roxpril was no where as fun as Roxtober. So far Roxay is looking bad, too. It seems all the Colorado teams are really struggling. It is like we are becoming like Kansas City and just losing with no hope (Yep, that line is for Matt). It could be worst, we could have no mountains or have losing teams like Miami has.
Since the Rockies, Avs, Nuggets, Mammoth, Crush, Eagles, my spring softball team, and my fantasy baseball teams are not having those magical seasons; it is time to look to the hills for our state’s help.
As you may or not know, I love to hike the Colorado 14ers. I have completed 32 of the 54 14ers, and maybe I will hike all of them someday.
Well, there are those who do more than hike the 14ers, they ski them as well. Till just a bit ago only two people had climbed and skied all the Colorado 14ers. So a big congratulations to Ted Mahon for becoming the third person to climb and ski all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks. That is very impressive!
