THE WEEKEND SITS ON MY HILLBILLY WORLD

“We have something called humidity. I don’t know who invented it, but they were cast out of the garden right away” – Rob Bell

The things we do for family. They can be fun things, boring things, and sometimes they are tough things. Like for instance making you head out east to land that full of heat and humidity. I do not like hot weather and it is even worst when it involves humidity, but I will suffer for a bit because it is for family. The reason for this suffereing and heat stroke, my cousin’s wedding. Yea Daryl.

We loaded up the van and headed to east to see family and celebrate in Daryl and Kandace’s wedding. The family lives in Southern Kansas, but the wedding was at the Great Salt Plains Lake in Oklahoma.

There was a question that haunted me as we drove across Kansas. See we had not met Kandace, yet, so meeting us would be her last test to see if she really wanted to be in our family. That is a big deal. Some people can handle some of us but not all of us. Would she run after meeting us or would she still marry Daryl? Deal or No Deal? Final Answer? Goodbye you are the weakness link? Could she handle any more annoying game show lines?

At last, we got to Harper and met Kandace. She is very nice and we did not seem to scare her away. So Friday evening we drove down to the wedding site with Aaron and Daryl. We went through the rehearsal and did our part right. Our part was standing when the bride walked by. I think we did a great job in pratice! Afterwards had a great dinner that Aunt Phyliss had made (still sounds yummy right now I am hungry), hung out with family and got to met Kandace’s family.

Saturday came and we all got to the wedding site on time. That is always a good start. Yet, it was hot (upper 90ies) and humid but the wind kicked in to cool it a bit. The wind did have a down side, too, it blew the sand all around so it would stick to body because of the humidity. Have I mention that I hate humidity and heat, yet?

The wedding was nice and the pastor made it very short. By far the shortest wedding I have ever been at, which is a great thing in my book. As the groom and bride walked to her dad’s car (1917 Model T) that would take them to the reception, we got to throw bird seed and snappers, a first for me at any wedding. That was pretty cool as all those snappers made it a great wedding sound.

After the reception, Daryl and Kandace headed to their honeymoon destination and we headed up to Grenola, KS. We spent that the next day there with my parents, aunts, uncle, and cousins. It was a nice time of just hanging out but it was so short we did not get to see some of my other family I was hoping to see.

On the way home, we saw a few good bummer stickers on the way home I had not seen before so I thought I would share their wisdom here.

Finally, as usual for my blog readers here is a sneak peek of the photos I will add to next website update. I went with kind of a redneck theme since we are pleased to be rednecks and not sophisticated people. If you have any good captions for the photos that match the theme, please leave a comment.

PLAYING BASEBALL WITH SHIRED ROCKS

Some quick thoughts on some local sports teams…

Colorado Mammoth
That would be the 2006 National Lacrosse League Champion Colorado Mammoth, thank you. Big ringing of the cowbells to the local team on winning a championship. Thus making the Nuggets the only team who plays at the Pepsi Center to never win or even play in a championship game. There is a party for them on Friday, June 9th for them according to their website.

Colorado Avalanche
Wow, they looked so good in the first round of the playoffs. Then duck season came for round two. Who knew Duck season meant the Duck win. Best line I heard about the Avs in the second round came from a caller or emailer to a local sports radio show, “They were the Nuggets on ice.”

Colorado Rockies
I would have never guess he Rockies would be in the toughest division in major league baseball and in first place or near the top for a good portion of the year so far. What is stranger is they are still have a higher hitting average on the road than they do at home? Their ERA is 5th BEST in the NL? It is a strange, and they playing like a team. Wow, I beat the Nuggets think that is just stupid.

Colorado Crush
They lost to Juice Box Boy’s team in the first round of the playoffs. Oh man, so much for defending their AFL title.

Colorado Eagles
Too bad they could not defended their AHL title. Oh well, they made it to the semi-finals and had a good year. Next year they will competition from Broomfield. That should be nice as the new area is not far from my new place.

Denver Broncos
Remember when the coach way back when drafted a quarter back instead of the help they needed and it cost him his job. Do you think history repeated itself? I don’t know, but I am still routing for Sunshine (my name for Van Pelt) to beat out both Plummer and Culter. A must see Win, Lose, and Drew cartoon on Plummer is here.

Denver Outlaws
Our new out door pro lacrosse team. They are off to a 2-0 start. Not only is the team looking good, the fans are looking great. In their first home game, a record MLL record 13,167 of people attending the game. Denver is just a sports crazed city. The funny part to is the record that we beat was our own of 12,674 at the 2005 Wild West All-Star Showdown that was here in Denver.

Denver Nuggets
Well, things could be worst, they could be moved to Kansas City to be KC’s next WNBA team. However, I think they are safe as they do not play good enough fundamentals to be in the WNBA. All they have going for them is Rocky, Melo, and the fact they are not the local soccer team.

Colorado Rapids
Um, they are a soccer team so like we care. Being a sport crazed city only goes so far.

LET’S NOT WASTE TIME WONDERING ABOUT

Just a couple of blog stories involving church that I thought were worth pointing out.

  • The first one is about a good idea not working out so well. I found out about it in a friend of mine blog.
Check it out here. It is very funny, no matter what you think of NASCAR.
  • The second story is just an old question, I think, involving spending money. I think it is tough to balance equipping the saints to ministry, reaching those in need, helping the poor, and supporting missionaries. All are good and needed things, but I guess this is part of the balance the church has to find. To me, it was a interesting topic. Click here for this one.

EYES OF A RANGER ARE UPON YOU

    Editor Note:
This is piece is from my friend Bob. Bob and I share a love for Broncos, Baseball, Mountains, and God. On April 22, 2006 he got to attend a Texas Ranger game against Tampa Bay Devil Rays. You can read the ESPN recap here.

Okay, the long awaited for pictures of my father and I’s trip to the “Ballpark at Arlington”, now know as Ameriquest Field in Arlington, Texas. Well, it is starting to become an annual trip for me to go to at least one different ball park each opening month. This would be my Third annual trip.

In 2005, I went to Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona to see the Diamondbacks play the cubs. I caught the Second home game of the season. In 2004, I was at Royal’s stadium ( I can’t get use to Kauffman Stadium, and I don’t think I got the spelling correct) at the end of April of that year. They actually won that game, believe it or not.

    Editor Note:
Ok, I have to insert my thoughts here. Bob was a Royal fan till the Rockies came along like me. Royals Stadium was renamed Kauffman Stadium officially re-named in honor of Ewing Kauffman 1993. Mr. Kauffman was the first owner of the Royals and since his death the Royals have never been the same. Mr. Kauffman is someone who I admire. One of my favorite things I own is a letter he sent me when I was in high school. I sent a letter to the Royals asking them to have a day to honor Dick Howser (another guy I admire) and I got a letter back from him. I was so shocked as I never expect to get anything. I am glad the Royals have honored Mr. Kauffman with the name on the stadium and not some corporation name like Coors. You can learn more about him and his foundation at this website. Oh, I scanned the letter he sent me and put it here.

This year, I went with my Father ( I am 47, he is 71) to see the Texas Rangers take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Funny how the age old tradition of a father and son going to the ballpark never wears thin. In actuality, this was the first time in my life that I went to a baseball game with my dad, just the two of us. Now, I have gone with him before, but with a bunch of other people at the same time. We had a great time together, and I am glad for it. That opportunity may never happen again.

Now , I have gone to many games with my own children, individually, and all together. So, I feel I have carried on that legacy of spending time with your kids at a ballgame. It is a great way to bond with them. We talk about everything under the sun. And yes, of course, about the game. Last Year, for the first time in my baseball days, I got to see Roger ( the rocket) Clemmens pitch. And I was with my youngest son Sean. That was a treat.
Clemens Pitched very well, but the Rockies beat their bull pen and won the game. That was the game with two grand slams in one game. One each by each team!!! I think that is a major league record!! At least a Coors field record.

So, there you go. Baseball in the Heart of Texas. A very pleasant 85 degrees. Great Hot dogs!! Oh, and in case you did not know, going into the top of the ninth inning, the Rangers were ahead 5-2. They bring on their closer, and he gives up a three run shot to deep right, with two outs, and a 2-2 count against the batter. Wow, I thought I was at Coors Field. Cause only the rocks do that!!!

However, the Rangers come back in the bottom half of the ninth, have a runner at first and second, after the second baseman misses the first tag at what should have been an inning ending double play. So, the runner at second is safe, the runner at first is safe. Up comes Mike Young, and hits a line drive to center and drives in the winning run. 6-5 is the final.

Yes, it was a great game!
